THE ART AND CRAFT OF FINE DIGITAL PRINTMAKING
The revolution is underway and the future of fine photographic printmaking will be based on digital tools and technology. Never before has the ability to make well-crafted images in color or black-and-white been so widely available, so affordable or so environmentally-friendly. With the right inks and substrates, the permanence of digital prints is no longer a concern. The challenge is to acquire the right skills and tools. Here are some of my favorite resources.
Manhattan Beach, California was ground zero for the birth of the digital printmaking movement when Graham Nash and Mac Holbert took a hacksaw to a brand-new $135,000 Iris printer in 1987. Two decades later, Nash Editions is still a focal point for the ongoing revolution in digital printmaking.

Websites of FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHERS
There are so many fine art photographers whose work has enriched my vision. These are just a few.
I am proud to say that long before he became the first photographer to achieve Betty Crocker status for household name recognition, Ansel’s vision and dedication to perfecting his craft were a huge influence during my formative years in art school. While there are many who cling to his work as validation of their view of “what photography really is”, I have no doubt that he would be one of the greatest proponents of digital photography today.
Breath, light, spirit, space - John Paul Caponigro’s photographs are visual poetry. Fortunately, JP is as committed to helping others to build their creativity as he is to pushing the boundaries of photography as means of artistic expression. He freely shares his expertise and insights through his newsletter and workshops.
Long before Photoshop was even a dream, Jerry Uelsmann was creating dreamlike images that are grounded in visual plausibility.
Vinnie is a master at crafting a sense of light in the digital print. To say that Vinnie is an energetic artist of with strong personal insights about the visual world, is an understatement. See his work online, read his book ‘Welcome to OZ’, study his DVDs. If you are struggling with digital black and white, make him your guru.
As far as I know, Todd Walker was the first photographer to create digital art. Todd was my teacher, mentor and friend during my years in the art school at the University of Arizona. In the early 80s, Todd used an Apple IIc to create color separations and print them on the small offset press he operated at his house. Todd’s use of alternative processes and his willingness to push photography beyond its contemporary boundaries have endured as personal lightening rods of inspiration to this day.
Websites of COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS
If your journey is in the commercial realm, study the work of these photographers.
Joe McNally is a master of location lighting. Who else would have the courage to use dozens of pocket strobes to light up a B-1 bomber for National Geographic. Although put on a pedestal by the legions of aspirants who flock to his presentations at Photoshop World, PhotoPlus and beyond, Joe is one of the most down-to-Earth photographers I’ve ever had the good fortune to work with. Look for Joe at workshops and seminars around the country.
Brian is the president of Editorial Photographers and a dynamic editorial photographer based in Miami. You’ll recognize his photos from ads and magazine covers that you’ve seen.
Gregory Heisler is a master of the modern photographic portrait. With more than 70 Time magazine covers to his credit, Greg’s photographs have appeared in millions of households. At the other end of the spectrum, he also created the first photographic portrait to hang in New York’s City Hall. Greg will teach at Santa Fe Workshops in the winter of 2008.

ONLINE FORUMS & COMMUNITIES
One of the great benefits of the Internet-era is the ability to converse with your peers while still wearing your jammies. Another benefit is that many online forums and communities can provide valuable insight into specific areas of our profession. Two requests. (1) Don’t let the forums become your obsession. Remember, you are a photographer. So log-off and go make some images. (2) There are real people on the other end of the internet. Don’t be a jerk and become a flamethrower just because you have a different opinion. If you find yourself getting mad… re-read (1).
